A story where one genius owl (Noctae) forsaw (with an equation) the destruction of all he knew by an asteroid or something massive (since it is not explained as to what gives death to every life). Maybe this is what the developers envisioned with the Owlboy story. The protagonist of Steins:Gate was so deep into the rope that has "the unchangeable event", that he thought it was impossible to change it but only had to go to deep enough to the knot. The knot is a major event that ocurred that you would need to untie for you to be able to access the universe where the "unchangeable event" can be possible to be changed.
One is the universe where the event is unchangeable and the other one where the event is changeable. Using the same rope example: imagine there is a knot in the rope and from that knot two different rope lines diverge. So what he ended up doing was going back many universes, back to an universe where the event outcome was no longer impossible to be changed. He was stuck in an universe where he thought said event was unable to be changed.
The protagonist in Steins:Gate would time travel back to try and prevent an event until he realized no matter what he tried, he wasnt able to change the outcome. But for this anime it was kind of different. You could envision it as a rope being split into two and so on. This theory believes that there is an universe for every action that could ever happen. There could be an universe where you tripped and didnt get hit by a truck or an universe where you didnt trip and got hit by a truck and hospitalized. Basically it is a time travel anime that inspires it self in the multi-universe theory. If you are familiar with the anime "Steins:Gate" you will know were I'm going but for the ones who dont know, let me explain it briefly. Taking into consideration what I explained about “The Loop” and the time travel theory, what I think the developers of the game were going with the story was a kind of Steins:Gate feel. And also because the only way you would even be able to get to Noctae's hologram and know all of the above would be by returning to Vellie (going to the past), since the pillar you place the token you get at the "Floating Tower" is at Stratos and there is no other option to returning to Vellie previous to beating the game since the rocketship gets destroyed at landing. We can infer that by returning to Vellie means that you are going to the past since the other only option is staying at the present. This is backed up by the fact that Noctae's hologram, almost at the end of the conversation at the "Eternal Sanctuary", states: "Perhaps our Hex machine worked, after all", just a few seconds after affirming that he also predicted the death of Otus in a great battle above in a floating city but that also, if his math calculation were true, Otus would also be at his hologram.Įxpanding on this, how could Otus be dead but also be at Noctae's hologram? If we recall, after finishing the game, if you get to continue the same game profile, you are inmediately located at your last save, that is the one just before the Solus fight, with just one difference, that next to you there is a star shaped object that after examining it, you get a black screen and two options: remain in the present or return to Vellie. To break out of their fate by allowing time traveling. A machine that could allow the Owls to break "The Loop". This is what I think leads to the creation of the "Hex Machine".
It is a popular adage that states "whatever can go wrong, will go wrong." ('s_law). I believe this is a reference to what we know as Murphy's Law in the real world. This is what I think is the great discovery the Owls made and it is referred in the world of Owlboy as "The Loop". He also said that no matter how many parameters he changed in his equation, he could not change the outcome that was his own death.
Because, if you didnt get to read the holograms and even the secret one, you wouldnt get to have "The Loop" and the reason as to why the "Hex Machine" was created, explained to you.Īfter going through Noctaes holograms he explains that, with mathematics, you can predict the trajectory of a rock or the orbit of a star but, after mastering it, he said that he could also predict his own death and even every death of every life. The ending expected you to collect all 3 Owl Tokens so that you would get to go to the "Eternal Sanctuary" read all the holograms (including the secret one too) and piece the story together. It seems rushed because of the way the ending was told. It is a very deep and well thought out story. The ending may seem unsatisfying at first because it seems kind of rushed and with many holes and questions unaswered, although it wasnt. 3-4 hours of research in and out of game and making the comment.
